Arctic Monkeys Took Over My Saturday
UPDATE (10/8/2016 7:55 PM): Replaced broken link.
There are a lot of reasons to love Arctic Monkeys. Beyond their music, one of my personal favorite reasons is that lead singer Alex Turner is physically incapable of not looking like a 1950’s greaser, but I’ll spare you the agony of having to read my ode to his style choices and focus on the much more important topic at hand. Today’s record on rotation for me is Arctic Monkey’s latest release AM which is the perfect accompaniment to my lazy Saturday afternoon.
The entire record just makes for a sultry and sexy fun time. Every song channels that signature punk rock sound and classic Sheffield croon that Arctic Monkeys has perfected over the course of their notable career and it’s almost too good to resist lounging about and getting lost in the smooth and hypnotic atmosphere coming across on this record. That would explain why it is 4 in the afternoon as I type this and I’m still in my PJ’s, grumpy cat mug on hand, sitting on the couch in my dorm suite’s family room when I could be enjoying a beautiful fall day in the city. The allure of Turner’s dreamy vocal range, the gritty guitar riffs, and infectious drums and bass lines was just too strong. This all probably could have been avoided if I hadn’t listened to “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High” earlier today, a personal highlight on the album. The staccato lead and bass guitar combined with the drums and the soft control in Turner’s voice make for a trippy and sexy groove that fits well with all the tracks on the album, most notably “Arabella” and “Do I Wanna Know?” which I also can’t get enough of for their trance inducing soundscapes.
I really can’t think of a better way to recover after a crazy week than to waste away the day with a record like this. Tomorrow, I promise I’ll be good and get ready to start the second week of my college sophomore career, but I think I’ll let Arctic Monkeys take me away for now.
