Great Good Fine Ok Kicking Off My Fall With An Incredible Debut EP

This summer didn’t just break the surreal experience scale, it obliterated any trace of one and just as soon as it began, I woke up in a house in Oregon with a tattoo on my thigh and a plane to catch. That, however, is another story for another time, but just know it involves a Dairy Queen and one really great concert. Anyway, with the final dregs of summer fading away and the last of my belongings making a home in this year’s dorm room, I do believe it is time for some new music to obsess over, don’t you? Of course you do. Well, I’ve got four words for you: Great Good Fine Ok. This Brooklyn-based electro indie pop band commandeered my summer and they are shaping up to take over my fall season with a debut EP, Blood Diamond, due worldwide on October 7th.

I literally stumbled across Great Good Fine Ok after discovering The Wild Honey Pie, an insanely cool music media collective. This groove inducing band teamed up with The Wild Honey Pie as part of the organization’s YouTube music series, “Welcome Campers,” to record a few intimate live performances which resulted in videos that look like footage from one heck of a party for the band and audience alike. Listening to the three songs Great Good Fine Ok has released to date, however, it is impossible to blame the audience for having such a good time. All you really need to do is hear their newest song, “By My Side,” because it is nothing short of summer ending perfection. A band dripping with neo-soul and R&B undertones, Great Good Fine Ok contemporizes 80’s inspired guitar riffs and synth melodies on this track by pairing them with futuristic effects and a killer punchy drum interlude. Tying it together is an out of this world falsetto that undeniably shines through the full sonic atmosphere. Specifically during the song’s bridge, the intense rhythm created throughout this track juxtaposes so well with the lead singer’s voice. Vocally climbing to higher and higher notes, the delivery of the lyrics still comes out cool and collected, lending a soothing and sensual quality to the song. The vocals sweetly coax out your inner dancer from the song’s very first line, so that by the time the chorus is in full swing, there is no saving you now. You’re just gonna have to accept the potentially mortifying display of dancing you are putting on for the world when you listen to this song. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

You can certainly bet I’ll be listening to Great Good Fine Ok on repeat leading up to their debut EP release next Tuesday. I mean, talk about a great way to kick off this fall. Check out their latest song, “By My Side,” in addition to their other songs in preparation for the debut. If you need me, I’ll be singing and dancing shamelessly in my room. Or in the hall. Or pretty much anywhere because what else is new. It’s good to be back, my friends. Now about that stint in Oregon…
