Late Night Insomniac Music Series: Rhye
UPDATE (10/8/2016 8:25 PM): Replaced broken links.
If you were to look at my Spotify activity over the past month, you’ll notice the ridiculous amount of times that the name Rhye shows up. This dou’s 2013 release, Woman, has been my go-to nighttime soundtrack (because, yes, I even fall asleep to music, you all know I have a problem), and every time I shut my eyes as I listen to the soothing melodies that make up this album, I think about how Woman does not bode well for the world in terms of our overpopulation problem. Rhye is the proverbial “baby making music” personified and, as much as I love every minute of their debut record, it’s probably a good thing that Rhye has not completely overtaken mainstream radio. I mean honestly, if the album’s lead single “The Fall,” got as much radio play as overplayed top 40 hits do, everybody would be getting pregnant. Everybody. All the time. Non-stop.
Forgive me for being so blunt (or don’t, your call), but there is no way to skirt around the raw sensual and sexual passion within the ten tracks on Woman because that is ALL there is. Instrumentally, there’s enough subtle reverberation, quivering strings, soulful piano, and smooth horns to melt the coldest of hearts. Each note flows delicately into your head as softly as a lover’s touch, leaving you weak at the knees and undone to the core. Lyrically, the words don’t just venture into the world of pure desire, they burst through your speakers and drag you through every fantasy you’ve ever had. Seriously, the first line in “The Fall” is literally “make love to me,” which would probably not go over nearly as well with me if it were anyone else. However, the soft and breathless vocal delivery of singer Milosh perfectly croons out each word with such innocent care that I can’t help but give into the erotic atmosphere. Milosh’s effeminate voice is so arousing that even on tracks such as “One of Those Summer Days” when he isn’t blatantly singing about sex, he still raises the temperature in the room to sweltering. Bring in those blunt and carnal lyrics on tracks like my personal favorite, “3 Days,” and the vibe goes from clothing optional to clothing forbidden.
For all those non-single people out there who are beginning to brainstorm romantic ways to spend this coming Valentine’s Day, I’m telling you all you need to do is put Rhye’s Woman on repeat, light some candles, and clear a little dance floor right next to the bed. Sprinkle some rose petals around as a finishing touch and boom! You’ve got a foolproof plan guaranteed to loosen ties and spread some… uhhh…Too far? Probably.
I think it’s time for me to go to sleep now.
Favorite songs:
“3 Days” (Perfect song in every way)
“Open” (Yes, just yes)
