LET THE GRAMMY FESTIVITIES BEGIN!

IT IS GRAMMY NIGHT! We are just minutes away from what is quite honestly the only award show I genuinely care about anymore. In honor of the occasion, I will be live blogging (and live tweeting) the festivities here and on my twitter. To kick things off, let’s start off with some quick predictions shall we?

Record of the year

Most likely: Get Lucky

-”Get Lucky” is so smooth with all the subtle syncopations of the different tones. Everything layers and blends together so well. The incorporation of every sound flows seamlessly without feeling choppy and unnecessarily jarring. Daft Punk are definitely going to be big winners tonight

Could be: Royals

-”Royals” and its intense clarity minimalist production value is refreshing and everyone’s been crazy about it. It probably would win if Lorde was a more established and seasoned artist, but her age hurts her chances.

Dark horse: Radioactive

-The blend between rock, pop, and dubstep instrumentation is brilliant and certainly warrants celebration. I doubt it’d win, but it’d be cool if it did because it’s definitely one of the more original records to come out of 2013

Album of the year

Most likely: Random Access Memories

-If they don’t get record of the year, they’ll get this one. I’d be surprised if didn’t get one of the top records. RAM was beautiful, It’s their first original release in a few years. The album had a clear coherent theme and flow. It all worked effortlessly which I’ve mentioned before in my album review of it.

Could be: Red

-This is purely a political pick from me. I haven’t heard this full album, but people love tswift. Like religiously. And add in the fact that Ed Sheeran’s worked on it, it’ll probably have a good shot at taking this one. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Dark horse:The Heist/Good Kid M.A.D.D. City

-Rap albums don’t win major categories at the Grammys, but there’s been a resurgence around rap and hip hop that is undeniable. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Kendrick Lamar had banner years, so I could see either pulling an upset. I would have to say that Macklemore has more of chance than Kendrick Lamar in the album of the year category, unfortunately, because Macklemore & Ryan Lewis got more mainstream attention than Lamar.

Song of the year

Most Likely: Royals

-I’m thinking this was too good to not get a nod from the Grammy crowd. It is impressively well written for someone so young. Plus, the theme and message is so strikingly new to the contemporary pop scene that the voters will eat it up. Not to mention, I’ve been jamming to it non stop every time I hear it.

Could be: Locked Out of Heaven

-Lyrically, this song was great. I think Bruno Mars is too talented, both as a songwriter and vocalist, on this track to let it slip through unrewarded. Sweet, romantic, and even a little playful - it’s pop perfection.

Dark Horse: Same Love

-It would send a strong statement if this song wins because of the political message behind it. It was a good song so I would be happy to see it win. Though I think it would win based on lyrical message over the music which isn’t a negative.

Best New Artist

Most Likely: Ed Sheeran

-Ed Sheeran is WAYYY too talented to lose completely at the grammys. Crazy talented songwriter, singer, musician. He’s worked with so many people in the music industry already. He’s winning. He HAS to. 2013 was too good for him and + was too good of a record to ignore.

Could be: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

-Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also had a great 2013 and they’ve been big winners at every other award show. Plus, they have that added bonus of being a wanna be hipster favorite so they could easily get a nod here.

Dark Horse: Kendrick Lamar

-Kendrick Lamar came into the rap game and took a (Sugar Honey Iced Tea) on everyone. I feel like he wouldn’t win because people got jealous at how he’s storming into the game, but that could be just enough reason to pull off an upset. He definitely would deserve it.

Best pop solo performance

Most Likely: Mirrors

-Let’s be real, JT shut down everyone last year with The 20/20 Experience and with that 20 minute VMA performance. EPIC doesn’t even begin to cover Justin Timberlake’s 2013. I’d be surprised if he gets passed up for this after such a dramatic and triumphant return to pop music.

Could be: When I Was Your Man

-Bruno Mars is a brilliant performer and his delivery on this track is emotional and stirring and pure, as always. If JT can’t win it I’d be okay with bruno

Dark Horse: Royals

-Again, “Royals” is too good not to acknowledge. Lorde, Ella Yelich-O'Connor, has such a beautiful maturity in her delivery of this song. Though it would be a shock to see her beat out JT AND Bruno, she definitely has the talent to compete and maybe surprise everyone.

*Note about Brave: Oh Sara…. She probably would have a better chance in my mind if Katy Perry didn’t rip her off. I’d be pissed if I were sara because Brave and Roar are literally the same song musically.

Best pop duo performance

Most Likely: Suit & Tie

- A first single nod to JT perhaps? Justin Timberlake is perfect and he and Jay Z are a match made in musical heaven. Also, if I’m not mistaken (which I’m not because I am such a Grammy junkie), they performed this at last year’s Grammy’s. It would be a little sad if “Suit & Tie”doesn’t snag this award.

Could be: Stay

-Rihanna’s voice is striking on this track and it blends so well with Mikky Ekko. With all of the radio play it received, I would not be surprised if this was the track to beat out “Suit and Tie”

Dark horse: Just Give Me A Reason

-Anything with Fun.’s Nate Ruess is flawless in my eyes (The Format’s entire career, anyone?) so him and Pink killed it on this track. Didn’t get the proper traction needed to beat out heavyweight JT or Rihanna in my mind but I do love the track in all it’s grand, sweeping, and pure glory.

*Note about “Blurred Lines”: If this song wins ANYTHING, I’m punching something. Probably a wall. Pillow would be a smarter option, but the rage I would feel at a win for this blatant Marvin Gaye rip off will not be containable.

Best pop vocal album

Most likely: The 20/20 Experience

-You all know how I feel about this album at this point. It has no flaws. Justin Timberlake runs the industry. Goodbye.

Could be: Unorthodox Jukebox

-Bruno’s voice is one of the more consistently great voices around and he’s just got a great vintage infused sound mixed with a laid back style.

Dark Horse: Pure Heroine

-I’m quite partial to Lorde, She’s got a darker and honest style with a more authentic production in each of her songs. I like where she could take the pop genre, given more time.
