Top 13 Favorite Albums of 2013 #12 - Forever Halloween by The Maine

UPDATE (10/8/2016 8:01 PM): Replaced broken links.

I couldn’t leave this one off the list considering all the ceiling staring I did while listening to the second single “Love and Drugs.” The Maine is such a solid band. They are one of those bands that I can go months without listening to and then, out of the blue, I’ll stumble across one of their albums on my iPod and spend the rest of the day absorbed in their music. My respect for them only seems to go up after each album they release and Forever Halloween is no exception because it is fantastic. Having recorded every song on the album live and on one track, the whole album feels like a raw and refreshing rock and roll record which is strikingly different from their more produced beginnings, but it still holds onto their unique style. Much of that has to do with lead singer and lyricist John O’Callaghan’s rich and sultry vocals and his candid writing. John O’Callaghan is such a skilled lyricist, with each song capturing all he emotions wrapped up in the trials of growing up and changing as a person, as a lover, you name it. The songs on Forever Halloween are probably the most honest songs they have written to date, and I didn’t think that was even possible after Pioneer and Black and White. Forever Halloween is just another testament to how much each member of The Maine has grown both as a musician and as a person. Honestly, listen to artistry behind the eerie instrumentation of “Blood Red” and try to tell me they aren’t brilliant. Great song, great band, great album. Simple as that.
