Top 13 Favorite Albums of 2013 #13 - A Bad Girl in Harlem by New Politics
UPDATE (10/8/2016 7:58 PM): Replaced link for "Fall Into These Arms".
Kicking off the countdown are alternative rockers New Politics with their album, A Bad Girl in Harlem. So many great new artists and bands broke out into the mainstream this year and New Politics is definitely one of my favorites. Now, they have put out an album before and “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” the lead single off that record, has been on my iPod since it came out in 2010. However, 2013 was New Politics’s year; their single “Harlem” was featured in multiple commercials and they partnered up with Taco Bell for their Feed the Beat program. On top of that, they landed themselves on some fantastic tours, playing shows with 30 Seconds to Mars on their fall tour, P!nk on her “Truth About Love” tour, and prior to that opening for Fall Out Boy on their first tour after ending their five year hiatus. Seeing New Politics live with Fall Out Boy in May reminded me all over again of how much I loved “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and got me hooked on their punchy and sassy brand of rock and roll. Members David Boyd, Soren Hansen, and Louis Vecchio can command a stage effortlessly and after you watch lead sing David Boyd belt out his “in your face” vocals as he’s in the middle of some insane break dance move, you can’t help but latch on to the gritty jam of the guitars on every track and just scream and jump along. I cannot tell you how many times my friends and I blasted “Harlem,” and “Tonight You’re Perfect” in our dorm rooms after seeing them live and listening to the album because I honestly can’t remember. All I remember is that it happened often and it was an embarrassing display of flailing bodies.
